iPhone Focus Filters: Silence Apps by Place
Your iPhone does not need fewer notifications — it needs the right notifications for where you are. Focus filters give each place its own rules in about five minutes.
Step by Step: Your First Focus Filter
- Open Settings → Focus and pick a Focus, or tap + to make one like 'Work'.
- Under People and Apps, allow only what that place needs.
- Scroll to Focus Filters and add filters: Mail accounts, Messages conversations, Safari tab groups, even app dark mode.
- Set activation: a schedule, a location, or both — the office geofence does the remembering for you.
Three Focuses That Cover a Life
| Focus | Allows | Silences |
|---|---|---|
| Work | Team, calendar, work mail | Social, shopping, games |
| Home | Family, favorites | Work mail and chat |
| Sleep | Alarm, emergency contacts | Everything else |
The Lock Screen Trick
Link a Lock Screen to each Focus and your phone's face changes with its rules — glanceable proof of which mode you are in. It pairs beautifully with the boundary thinking in this related guide
Common Snags
If a Focus will not trigger by location, check Location Services for System Services. If an app still buzzes, it may be marked Time Sensitive — review that list once and the leaks stop.
Summary: One Phone, Three Personalities
Set the filters once and your iPhone starts respecting your context instead of interrupting it. Start with Work and Sleep; add the rest when they earn it.
Which app would you silence first at work?
