The Fake CAPTCHA Trap: Why That "Verify You're Human" Box Wants You to Run Its Command

Microsoft just warned about a new wave of "ClickFix" attacks hiding malware behind fake verification screens. Here's how the trap works, the 5-second rule that defeats it, and what to do if you already clicked.

🚨 The Trap, Step by Step

Security researchers call it ClickFix: you land on a compromised website and see what looks like a CAPTCHA or a "fix this error" panel. It instructs you to press Win+R, paste something from your clipboard, and hit Enter — supposedly to "verify you're human."

That pasted text is a malicious command. The newest variants (flagged by Microsoft Threat Intelligence in October 2026) even hide the payload in your browser's cache so the visible command looks short and innocent. Run it, and it can silently install credential-stealing malware.

🧠 The 5-Second Rule That Defeats It

A legitimate CAPTCHA never asks you to touch your keyboard's Run dialog, Terminal, or PowerShell. It stays inside the browser: click the box, pick the traffic lights, done.

  1. If a "verification" mentions Win+R, paste, or a command — close the tab immediately. That's the attack.
  2. Never paste text from a website into the Run dialog or Terminal. Your clipboard is a loaded weapon; websites can fill it without asking.
  3. When in doubt, close it out. A real security check never punishes you for leaving.

🛡️ Already Pasted Something? Don't Panic — Act Fast

  • Disconnect from the internet right away (pull the cable or turn on airplane mode).
  • Run a full antivirus scan — then a second-opinion scan with a different tool.
  • Change your passwords from a different, clean device, starting with email and banking.
  • Watch for odd behavior: new browser extensions, pop-ups, or programs you didn't install.

✅ Your 60-Second Safety Checklist

  • CAPTCHAs live in the browser — never in your Run dialog.
  • Win+R + paste + Enter from a website = malware. Every time.
  • Already ran it? Disconnect, scan, change passwords from a clean device, then call the wizard.
