iPhone Back Tap: Double-Tap the Back for Secret Powers

Your iPhone has a secret button — and it's the entire back of the phone. Hidden in Accessibility settings, Back Tap turns two quick taps on the rear glass into anything you want: screenshot, flashlight, camera, even a custom Shortcut. Sixty seconds of setup, and your thumb never has to stretch again.

The 60-Second Setup Spell

No downloads, no hacks — this iPhone trick has been hiding in iOS since version 14:

  1. Open Settings, tap Accessibility, then Touch.
  2. Scroll all the way down and tap Back Tap.
  3. Choose Double Tap — then pick your action. Screenshot is the crowd favorite.
  4. Go back and give Triple Tap its own job too. Two secret buttons for the price of none.

It works on iPhone 8 and newer. Changed your mind? Revisit the same screen and set the gesture to None — spell broken. While you're in Settings handing out superpowers, kill your passwords with the passkey spell too — faster and safer in the same sitting.

5 Spells Worth Assigning

  • Screenshot on Double Tap — the classic. The fastest capture your phone knows.
  • Flashlight on Triple Tap — your midnight hallway hero, no lock-screen fumble.
  • Camera — never miss the shot again, then make those shots count with these iPhone camera power moves.
  • Lock Screen — lock up one-handed without hunting for the side button.
  • Any Shortcut — Shazam a song, toggle Low Power Mode, or fire your favorite automation.

Google's version is called Quick Tap: go to Settings → System → Gestures → Quick Tap, flip the toggle, and pick your action — screenshot, flashlight, play/pause media, notifications, or launch any app. If it fires too easily, turn on Require stronger taps in the same menu. It lives on Pixel 6 and newer. Craving more hidden Android levers? Here are 5 hidden settings that won't break your phone.

The Wizard's Fine Print

  • Back Tap only fires while the screen is on — and anything that opens an app or runs a Shortcut needs the phone unlocked first, so pocket bumps stay harmless.
  • Thick, rugged cases can muffle the taps; slim cases register just fine. If it feels flaky, test once with the case off.
  • One more 60-second upgrade: share your Wi-Fi with a QR code instead of shouting the password across the room.

That's the whole spell: two taps, zero thumb gymnastics, and a phone that feels like it gained a secret button — because it did.

So — which action are you assigning to your double-tap: screenshot, flashlight, or something sneakier?
