How2 Mac: Set Up Hot Corners and Feel Like a Screen Wizard

Fling your cursor into a corner and — boom — Mission Control, lock screen, Quick Note, whatever you want. Hot Corners are macOS's best-kept speed secret, and they take 2 minutes to set up.

🔥 What Are Hot Corners?

Hot Corners turn each corner of your screen into a magic trigger. Push your mouse into the top-right corner and your Mac can instantly lock, show all your windows, start the screensaver, open Quick Note, or launch Mission Control. No keyboard shortcut to memorize, no menu to hunt — just fling and forget.

It's the kind of feature that sounds minor until you use it for a week. Then watching someone not use it feels like watching someone churn butter.

⚙️ The 2-Minute Setup

  1. Open System Settings (Apple menu → System Settings).
  2. Go to Desktop & Dock, then scroll all the way down and click Hot Corners…
  3. You'll see four dropdowns — one per corner. Click each and pick an action.
  4. Close the window. Done. Fling your cursor into a corner and feel the power.

Pro move: hold Option (⌥) while choosing an action to require the key — this prevents accidental triggers when you're just aiming for the menu bar or the Dock.

🗺️ The Wizard's Recommended Corner Map

Corner Action Why
Top-left Mission Control See every window at a glance when things get chaotic
Top-right Quick Note Jot a thought without breaking flow
Bottom-left Lock Screen One fling and your Mac is secure when you stand up
Bottom-right Desktop Shove windows aside to grab that file, then fling back

Prefer Launchpad, Notification Center, or the screensaver? Swap any of these — the map above is a starting point, not a religion.

🧙 Level Up: Combos & Cleanup

  • Corner + keyboard: pair a Hot Corner with a keyboard shortcut for the same action and you'll have both muscle memories covered.
  • Multi-monitor: Hot Corners trigger on whichever display your cursor is on — set them once, they work everywhere.
  • Accidental triggers? That's what the Option-key modifier is for. Set it on the corners near the menu bar and Dock.
  • Changed your mind? Go back to the Hot Corners panel and set a corner to "–" (dash) to disable it. No harm, no foul.
