Part 2 of the wizard's Silksong master guide: the Crest system, red/yellow/blue tools, the Rosary economy, early boss strategy, and surviving Pharloom's double-damage world.
Welcome back to Pharloom, fellow silk-spinners. In Part 1, you survived your first hours — you learned the lay of Moss Grotto, met the locals of Bone Bottom, and discovered that this kingdom hits much harder than Hallownest did. Now it's time for the real curriculum: the Crest system, the tool economy, and the boss encounters that will test everything you've learned.
This is Part 2 of the wizard's comprehensive Silksong guide. Grab your Needle. Class is in session.
The Crest System: Your Build, Your Rules
Silksong's biggest departure from the original Hollow Knight is the Crest system — equipable playstyle templates that reshape Hornet's entire moveset, silk abilities, and tool slots. Your starting Hunter's Crest is a balanced foundation, but Pharloom hides more, and each one plays like a different character.
- Reaper's Crest — Hidden in the Chapel of the Reaper in Greymoor. It changes Hornet's diagonal downward slash into a straight downward pogo strike, mirroring the Knight's classic nail-pogo. If you're a veteran of the first game whose muscle memory screams "pogo," this crest is your love letter — it's the precision platforming build.
- Wanderer's Crest — Two yellow tool slots and serious damage output, making it the premier exploration and boss-bullying build. Earning it requires real legwork: unlocking Sprint in the Deep Docks (past Mossome and the Bell Beast), buying a Simple Key from the Bone Bottom vendor for 500 Rosaries, and threading the Wormways west of Mossome. Farm your Rosaries first — 500 is a steep early-game price.
- Architect's Crest — Claimed in the Chapel of the Architect; pairs beautifully with machine-style tool builds.
The wizard's rule: swap crests between boss attempts. A crest that's perfect for exploring The Marrow may be dead weight against a mobile duelist like Lace, who mirrors Hornet's agility and punishes sloppy movement. Experimentation is free; stubbornness costs masks.
The Tool Economy: Red, Blue, and Yellow
Tools fall into three colors, and each crest grants a specific slot layout for them:
- Red tools — Your combat gadgets. Straight Pin (throwing needles), the Threefold Pin, the infamous Pimpillo incendiary grenade (huge area damage, but each bomb costs a whopping 20 Shell Shards to craft — use them like fine china, not fireworks). Red tools are crafted with Shell Shards and, crucially, don't consume Silk — they're your consistent damage engine.
- Blue tools — Passive buffs: elemental damage on your needle, silk ability improvements, attack modifiers. The quiet force-multipliers.
- Yellow tools — Support and navigation: the Magnetite Brooch from the Bone Bottom vendor (automatically draws nearby Rosary Beads to you — buy it early and never watch currency fall into lava again), movement enhancements, and exploration aids.
Sting Shards are the wizard's recommended early red-tool investment — versatile, cheap, and reliable across the whole game. And remember: Rosaries are the currency, but loose Rosaries drop on death. Secure them with Rosary Strings before tackling dangerous zones. Think of strings as insurance for explorers with ambition.
Boss Strategy: Universal Laws of Pharloom
Silksong features over 40 bosses, and the design philosophy has shifted hard from the first game:
- Everything hits like a truck. A majority of enemies deal double-mask damage — in the original Hollow Knight, that was reserved for endgame threats. Here it's Tuesday. Hornet compensates with faster movement and her insanely powerful heal: one silk charge restores three masks, even mid-air. Play aggressive, heal smart.
- Tools are free damage. They don't cost Silk. Weave red tools into every boss pattern — consistent chip damage wins fights that nail swings can't finish.
- Never heal greedily. Lace, the duelist boss, exists specifically to punish players who panic-Bind. Learn the pattern, find the safe window, and only then heal.
- The Bell Beast is your best friend. This early boss in The Marrow unlocks Pharloom's fast-travel network — watch for triple-arrow signs leading to Bellway chambers, and spend Rosaries to activate stations permanently. Mobility is power.
The Silk Economy: Where to Spend First
Your first big purchases set the tone for the mid-game:
- Crafting Kit (450 Rosaries) — unlocks stronger tool crafting. Priority one.
- Simple Key (500 Rosaries, Bone Bottom vendor) — opens the path to the Wanderer's Crest and other locked content.
- Magnetite Brooch (Yellow tool) — Rosary insurance and quality of life in one.
- Magma Bell — lava resistance for the volcanic zones ahead.
- Rosary String upgrades — the deeper you go, the more you have to lose.
Farm smart: the bench between Mosshome and The Marrow is a reliable Rosary loop — rest, clear left, repeat. Boring? Yes. Effective? Extremely.
What's Next
In Part 3, the wizard descends into the late-game: Greymoor, the Deep Docks, Act III movement tech like the Drifter's Cloak, and the endgame boss gauntlet that separates the silk-spinners from the silk-wannabes. Until then — bind often, pogo precisely, and remember: in Pharloom, the floor is lava, the walls are spikes, and the ceiling is also, somehow, lava.
Part 1 covered your first hours in Pharloom — Moss Grotto, Bone Bottom, and the basics of survival. If you skipped it, your Needle is already duller than everyone else's.
