Alakazam's Archives: The Prerelease Raichu Files — The Card That Was Never Supposed to Exist

Welcome back, Archivists. Every hobby has its ghost story — a card everyone whispers about, nobody can produce, and the manufacturer swears never existed. The Pokémon TCG has exactly one, and it's a Base Set Raichu with a stamp it was never meant to carry.

This is the story of how a print-sheet error at Wizards of the Coast in 1999 created fewer than a dozen copies of one of the rarest English-language Pokémon cards ever printed — a card that sold for $550,000 at Heritage Auctions in September 2025.

The Deep-Dive

How a Clefable Sheet Grew a Raichu

In 1999, WotC prepared the Prerelease Clefable — a Jungle-set promo stamped "PRERELEASE" and handed out at early Pokémon League events. The print sheet was supposed to contain nothing but Clefables.

  • The error: the first version of the sheet mistakenly included a small number of Base Set Raichus stamped with the Prerelease designation alongside the Clefables.
  • The catch: proofing caught it before full production — but the sheet was otherwise fine, so it was sliced into cards anyway, and the accidental Raichus went home with WotC staff.
  • The cover-up: WotC denied the card existed at all. For years it was forum folklore — until 2006, when a former WotC employee produced photographic proof and the hobby had to accept the ghost was real.
  • The count: reports put the surviving population at eight (per one former staffer's account) or eleven (per another). Either way: fewer than a dozen copies on Earth.

Grading the Ungradable

  • 2023 — first authentication: CGC certified two copies, grading them 5.5 and 8. For 24 years, no grading company had ever touched one.
  • September 2025 — the record: a PSA-graded EX-MT 6 copy sold through Heritage Auctions for $550,000 — the only copy PSA has ever graded, with zero prior sales history in their database. The consignor was reportedly a former WotC project manager who had held the card for roughly 25 years.
  • Why it matters: with 8–11 copies known and most in private hands, this is not a card you hunt — it's a card you hear about. Prerelease Raichu is rarer in absolute numbers than the famed Pikachu Illustrator (roughly 40 distributed).
  • Grading quirk: the card's provenance is the grade's shadow — authentication leans heavily on the stamp's typography and the chain of custody back to 1999 WotC staff.

The Binder Check

Here's the beautiful part: the Prerelease Raichu exists because a proof-sheet caught an error one pass too late. Every grail in this hobby is a manufacturing mistake that survived. So go check your binders — not for a Raichu (you don't have one, and neither do I), but for the misprints, the odd stamps, the cards that look slightly wrong. Today's factory error is tomorrow's Heritage headline.

Until next time — keep your sleeves tight and your provenance tighter. 🃏
