Alakazam's Archives: The Wartortle Paradox
Welcome back to Alakazam's Archives, your premier hub for the weirdest, rarest, and most fascinating lore in the Pokémon Trading Card Game! Today, we are taking a microscopic look at one of the most famous layout blunders in the history of the franchise. It’s a card that somehow forgot its own origin story.
We are talking about the infamous Base Set "Evolution Box Error" Wartortle. During the early days of English TCG production, a bizarre graphic design mishap completely erased poor Squirtle from existence, resulting in a Stage 1 Pokémon that apparently evolves... from itself!
The Copy-Paste Catastrophe
To understand how a Pokémon could evolve from itself, we have to look at how Wizards of the Coast (WotC) designed the original English cards. Each card was built using digital layout templates, where graphic designers would manually drag and drop assets like attack text, HP numbers, and character art into their respective frames.
In the case of this specific Wartortle, someone at the WotC design desk made a legendary "copy-paste" error. Here is exactly how it happened:
- The Double Drop: The designer correctly placed the Ken Sugimori illustration of Wartortle into the main art window. However, they accidentally pasted that exact same Wartortle image into the tiny "Evolves from Squirtle" box in the top-left corner.
- The Printing Phase: This layout error slipped past proofreaders and made it onto the printing plates before the mistake could be caught and corrected.
