Forgetting your MacBook password can be frustrating, but Apple provides multiple ways to reset it. This guide will walk you through the different methods, including options for M1, M2, and M3 Macs.

Method 1: Use Your Apple ID (If Enabled)

If you’ve linked your Apple ID to your Mac login, you can reset the password easily:

1. Restart your Mac and wait for the login screen.

2. Click on your user account and enter any password three times.

3. A message will appear: “If you forgot your password, you can reset it using your Apple ID.”

4. Click “Reset it using your Apple ID” and enter your Apple ID credentials.

5. Follow the instructions to create a new password.

6. Restart your Mac and use the new password to log in.

Method 2: Use Recovery Mode (For Intel & M-Series Macs)

If your Mac doesn’t give you the option to reset with Apple ID, you’ll need to use macOS Recovery Mode. The steps differ slightly for Intel Macs and Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3) Macs.

For M-Series Macs (M1, M2, M3)

1. Turn off your Mac.

2. Press and hold the Power button until you see “Loading startup options.”

3. Click Options and then Continue to enter macOS Recovery.

4. Select “Forgot all passwords?” and follow the on-screen instructions.

If you don’t see that option, use Terminal:

1. In macOS Recovery, go to Utilities > Terminal.

2. Type:

resetpassword

and press Enter.

3. Follow the prompts to reset your password.

4. Restart your Mac and log in with the new password.

For Intel Macs

1. Restart your Mac and immediately press Command (⌘) + R until you see the Apple logo or a spinning globe.

2. When the macOS Utilities window appears, click Utilities > Terminal from the menu bar.

3. Type:

resetpassword

and press Enter.

4. Follow the instructions to set a new password.

5. Restart your Mac and log in.

Method 3: Erase Your Mac (If Other Methods Don’t Work)

If none of the above methods work, your only option is to erase your Mac and set it up as new.

Steps to Erase Your Mac:

1. Boot into macOS Recovery (Follow the steps from Method 2).

2. Select Disk Utility and click Continue.

3. Choose Macintosh HD from the sidebar and click Erase.

4. Select APFS or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the format.

5. Click Erase and confirm.

6. Close Disk Utility and return to the macOS Utilities screen.

7. Click Reinstall macOS and follow the on-screen instructions.

After the reset, you can restore your data from Time Machine or set up your Mac as new.

Final Tips

• Use a Password Manager: Save your Mac password in a secure password manager to prevent future lockouts.

• Enable FileVault: If FileVault is enabled and you forget your password without recovery options, you might have to erase your Mac entirely.

• Create a Spare Admin Account: Having an extra admin account can help you reset your main account’s password in case you forget it.

By following these steps, you should be able to regain access to your MacBook without too much hassle!
